Purpose

In order to comply with government regulations (PHS and USDA) and the Association for the Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care, International (AAALAC), the University of Connecticut Health Center's Animal Care Committee (ACC) has implemented a policy stating that the ACC will use the recommendations and standards set forth by The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (NRC, 1996) in determining appropriate standards of laboratory animal care.

Action

Any protocols or situations which require a deviation from the Guide must be submitted to the ACC in writing with a justification of why the deviation is required.  This justification must be scientifically sound and not for the convenience of the investigator or for monetary reasons.

Effective Dates:  July 31, 2008 thru June 30, 2011
